On Tuesday, September 12, I’ll present an entertaining and informative cocktail seminar at the SPLiCE Licensing Expo in Los Angeles, CA on the topic of trademark disputes in the world of spirits, cocktails and bartending.

On Saturday, September 16, 2023, I’ll present my famous Ernest Hemingway cocktail seminar for a private club at Tavira Restaurant in Chevy Chase, MD.

On Saturday, October 21, 2023, I’ll once again serve as Toastmaster for the William Donovan Award Dinner, hosted in Washington, DC by the OSS Society. I’ll create a signature cocktail for the event and offer a fun and informative toast to the black-tie crowd of about 700 people.

On Wednesday, December 6, 2023, I will present an entertaining cocktail seminar on my new book, Cheers! Cocktails and Toasts to Celebrate Every Day of the Year, at the Smithsonian in Washington, DC.

Notable Recent Events (in reverse chronological order)

On June 6, 2023, I served as the Toastmaster at an event held by the OSS Society at the Cannon House Office Building in Washington, DC, commemorating the 79th anniversary of the D-Day invasion in 1944. I created a special drink for the occasion, the Fortitude Cocktail, named for the Allies’ plan to keep the date and location of the Normandy Invasion secret from Nazi Germany. The event was attended by members of Congress, and diplomatic officials from all over the world.

On May 5th, 2023, I presented an entertaining cocktail seminar on my new book, Cheers! Cocktails and Toasts to Celebrate Every Day of the Year, at the Sandy Spring Museum, Sandy Spring, MD.

On May 4th, 2023, I presented my famous Ernest Hemingway cocktail seminar at the prestigious Smithsonian in Washington, DC. It was a sold-out show, over 150 people.

On Thursday, April 13, 2023, I presented an entertaining cocktail seminar on my new book, Cheers! Cocktails and Toasts to Celebrate Every Day of the Year, at the historic Michigan Shores Club in Wilmette, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago.

On Saturday, April 1, 2023, I presented my famous Cocktails in the Stream seminar for the Hemingway Rum Company in Key West, Florida. On February 16, 2023, as the keynote speaker for Manhattan Week, an event celebrating the Manhattan Cocktail sponsored by Angel’s Envy Bourbon, I presented a lively and informational seminar on the history, folklore and legacy of the iconic Manhattan Cocktail. The event was held at the historic Empire Hotel in Midtown Manhattan.

On January 29, 2023, I presented my world famous Ernest Hemingway cocktail seminar at Mirabel Country Club, Scottsdale, AZ, before a packed house.

On January 9, 2023, I did an entertaining presentation on my new book, Cheers! Cocktails and Toasts to Celebrate Every Day of the Year, at the Museum of the American Cocktail, New Orleans, LA.

On December 19, 2022, I emceed, produced and presented at the annual D.C. Holiday Cocktail Seminar, at Last Call in NE Washington, DC, near Union Market.

On December 13, 2022, I did a sold out presentation on my new book, Cheers! Cocktails and Toasts to Celebrate Every Day of the Year, at the historic City Tavern Club in Georgetown, Washington, DC.

On December 7, 2022, I did a book launch evening at Allegory, the famed speakeasy of the Eaton Hotel in Washington, DC, to celebrate my fourth book, Cheers! Cocktails and Toasts to Celebrate Every Day of the Year.

On October 22, I presented once again the opening toast for the OSS Society, at their annual Donovan Awards Dinner. On this evening, before a packed crowd of 800 people, I spoke about, and made, a drink I created called The Spy Who Came in From Queens, honoring former CIA Director George Tenet. On October 17, 2022, I presented a seminar on the Manhattan cocktail, before a packed crowd of Miami’s finest craft bartenders. The event was held at the legendary Sweet Liberty in South Beach, and was sponsored by Woodford Reserve and Old Forester whiskies.

On October 7-8, 2022, I presented a lively and entertaining seminar on the life and favorite cocktails of Ian Fleming and James Bond/007 in Traverse City and Alpena, Michigan. This was another in a series of events for Hospice of Michigan, where I helped raise tens of thousands of dollars.

On September 26, 2022, I presented my Hemingway cocktail seminar for a group of hospice care professionals in Boulder, CO.

On September 16, 2022, I presented my Hemingway cocktail seminar for the Sandy Spring Museum in Sandy Spring, MD. It was a sold out show.

On September 13, 2022, I presented an entertaining Hemingway cocktail seminar at Hemingway’s Cuba, a bar/restaurant in Asheville, NC.

On September 9, 2022, I gave a cocktail seminar to local bartenders in Detroit, hosted by the amazing Bar Pigalle.

On September 7-8, I presented my Ernest Hemingway Cocktail Seminar in Grand Rapids and Detroit, Michigan, respectively, as part of a fundraising campaign for the non-profit Hospice of Michigan.

On August 30, 2022, I presented a lively cocktail seminar on Drinks in the Military, at Fairfax Assisted Living in Fairfax, VA.

On August 5, 2022, I presented a very entertaining cocktail seminar on Paris in the 1920s, held at the historic City Tavern Club in Georgetown, Washington, DC.

On August 2, 2022, I offered the introductory toast for yet another installment of the OSS Society’s “Oh So Social Speaker Series,” featuring world renowned experts on intelligence, special operations and counter espionage activities (including former, and many others).  The guest of honor at this event was former CIA Director and Army General David Petraeus.

On July 23, 2022, I took part in a panel discussion (along with Valerie Hemingway, author of Running With the Bulls: My Years With the Hemingways, and Chris Warren, author of Ernest Hemingway in the Yellowstone High Country) titled “Writing Biography On a Mythical Life.” I also presented a very entertaining Hemingway Cocktail Seminar that evening. May 19, 2022, I curated the evening’s specialty cocktail and offered introductory comments and a toast during a book talk held at the University Club in Washington, D.C.

March 15, 2022, I presented a New Orleans cocktail seminar for the defense contractor Atlas Up as an employee entertainment. The event was held at Buffalo & Bergen in Washington, D.C.

Spring/Summer, 2022, I served as a judge for the Tales of the Cocktail Spirited Awards for “Best New Book” category.

December 21, 2021, I presented an opening toast and cocktail demonstration for the annual holiday party for the company Alirrium (a robotics manufacturer), offering a demonstration of the H.G. Wells Cocktail.

November 16, 2021, I offered a ten-minute toast (with cocktail demonstration) for yet another installment of the OSS Society’s “Oh So Social Speaker Series,” featuring world renowned experts on intelligence, special operations and counter espionage activities. On this evening, my presentation concerned a bartender in Cairo, Egypt during World War II and his famous drink, The Suffering Bastard.

July 29, 2021, I offered the introductory toast for yet another installment of the OSS Society’s “Oh So Social Speaker Series,” featuring world renowned experts on intelligence, special operations and counter espionage activities (including former, and many others).  On this evening, I presented the Guadalcanal Cocktail, made famous by members of the 1st Marine Division in August of 1942, during the successful invasion of that island. 

July 28, 2021, I presented a cocktail seminar for the Loyola University (New Orleans) Alumni Association on the topic of Classic Summertime Cocktails (with a New Orleans twist).

On June 24, 2021, I presented a (virtual) cocktail seminar for Smithsonian Associates in Washington, DC, on the topic of Classic Summertime Cocktails.  Approximately 175 people attended.  Many of the attendees purchased cocktail kits allowing them to make the drinks at home.

On June 13, 2021, I presented a cocktail seminar for the International F. Scott Fitzgerald Society on the topic of Fitzgerald and Hemingway’s favorite cocktails.

On May 20, 2021, I presented a seminar on trademark law for the U.S. Department of the Navy’s Office of the General Counsel, as part of their annual OGC Training Symposium.

Also on May 20, 2021, I presented a cocktail seminar titled “Famous New Orleans Cocktails,” for the Medical Association of Southeast Louisiana.

On May 13, 2021, I was the “opening act” of the OSS Society’s “Oh So Social Speaker Series,” featuring world renowned experts on intelligence, special operations and counter espionage activities (including former, and many others).  On this evening, which included a conversation with former CIA Director Leon Panetta and Admiral William McRaven, who led the daring and successful Operation Neptune’s Wrath (the Osama Bin Laden Raid), I presented a 10-minute toast to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the raid, as well as the creation of the Navy SEALs in WWII, and created and presented a special drink and offered a toast.

On May 11, 2021, I was the sole judge of a virtual cocktail seminar, as part of the evening’s social event for the U.S. Department of the Navy’s Office of the General Counsel, as part of their annual OGC Training Symposium.

On May 5, 2021, I presented a cocktail seminar on Classic Summertime Cocktails, for the Montgomery County (MD) Medical Society.

On April 29, 2021, I was the “opening act” of the OSS Society’s “Oh So Social Speaker Series,” featuring world renowned experts on intelligence, special operations and counter espionage activities (including former Secretaries of Defense James Mattis, Leon Panetta and Robert Gates, General Andrew Petraeus, Admiral William McRaven, and many others).  On this evening, which 1will include a conversation with WWII hero John Billings, on the topic of his new book, Special Duties Pilot, about his exploits during the war (which inspired the Quentin Tarantino film “Inglourious Basterds” (sic).  I presented a 10-minute toast to the Mr. Billings and created/presented a drink in his honor, inspired by his exploits.

On March 25, 2021, I was the “opening act” of the OSS Society’s “Oh So Social Speaker Series,” featuring world renowned experts on intelligence, special operations and counter espionage activities (including former Secretaries of Defense James Mattis, Leon Panetta and Robert Gates, General Andrew Petraeus, Admiral William McRaven, and many others).  On this evening, which included a conversation with author Erika Robuck on the topic of her new book, The Invisible Woman, about legendary American WWII spy Virginia Hall, I presented a 10-minute toast to the Ms. Hall and created/presented a drink I called the Cuthbert Cocktail.

On March 16, 2021, I presented a Cocktails 101 seminar.  The event was a private party for the staff and employees of Washington, D.C.’s lobbying firm, BGR. 

On January 29, 2021, I presented a cocktail seminar on the Manhattan Cocktail.  The event was a private party for the staff and employees of Prestige Ledroit Distributing Company.

On January 28, 2021, I was the “opening act” of the OSS Society’s “Oh So Social Speaker Series,” featuring world renowned experts on intelligence, special operations and counter espionage activities (including former Secretaries of Defense James Mattis, Leon Panetta and Robert Gates, General Andrew Petraeus, Admiral William McRaven, and many others).  On this evening, which included a seminar and conversation with Secretary Mattis, I presented a 10-minute toast to the OSS featuring an historic cocktail and a story about its origins, folklore, etc., and told a story about the OSS during World War II.  Ifeatured the Gimlet cocktail and told the story of legendary Marine Corps General Smedley “Gimlet Eye” Butler.

On January 22, 2021, I presented a cocktail seminar on military themed cocktails for the historic and prestigious Army Navy Club in downtown Washington, DC. 

December 11 and 12, 2020.  I was the emcee and presented a drink at the 13th annual D.C. Holiday Cocktail Seminar, which I’ve produced since 2008.  The event features some of D.C.’s finest (and funnest) bartenders and will raise money to support out-of-work bartenders in the region.

December 10, 2020, presenting a 45-minute seminar on classic cocktails made with sparkling wine, as part of a fundraiser called Prosecco & Poinsettias, for the Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart, in Bethesda, MD, where our three girls attended high school.

Each Thursday evening in October, 2020 (1, 8, 15, 22 and 20), I was the “opening act” of the OSS Society’s “Oh So Social Speaker Series,” featuring world renowned experts on intelligence, special operations and counter espionage activities (including former Secretaries of Defense Leon Panetta and Robert Gates, General Andrew Petraeus, Admiral William McRaven, and many others).  Each evening I presented a 10-minute toast to the OSS featuring an historic cocktail and a story about its origins, folklore, etc., and told a story about the OSS during World War II.

August 6, 2020, at the request of the Chicago-based investment firm The Capital Group, Inc., I presented a cocktail seminar on the topic of my book To Have and Have Another: A Hemingway Cocktail Companion.  It was presented virtually due to COVID-19.

July 30 – August 3, 2020, recorded two seminars that will be aired in September for the prestigious Tales of the Cocktail festival in New Orleans, one on “The Man Behind James Bond: Ian Fleming,” and the other on the history, folklore and favorite drinks of the iconic Rat Pack, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr., and others.  These presentations were supposed to have taken place live in July but have been recorded and postponed due to COVID-19.  They both aired in September, 2020.

July 23, 2020, presented a virtual seminar with author John Hemingway, grandson of Ernest Hemingway, for the Key West Art and Historical Society, Key West, FL.  My portion of the event was a cocktail seminar on Ernest Hemingway’s life in Paris and visits to Pamplona during the 1920s.  It was presented virtually due to COVID-19.

June 9, 2020, presented a short cocktail seminar on story of Ernest Hemingway “liberating” the Paris Ritz Hotel on August 25, 1944 during World War II, as part of the airing of a short film concerning the role of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) in the liberation of France during World War II.  The event was hosted by the French-American Chamber of Commerce.

May 20, 2020, was emcee and presented during a virtual cocktail seminar with other bartenders from Washington, DC to raise money for unemployed bartenders and others as a result of the COVID-19 shutdown.

In April, 2020, I was to travel to Minneapolis, MN for a range of events surrounding my book To Have and Have Another: A Hemingway Cocktail Companion, including a guest-bartending stint at the Lawless Distillery, a brunch with the local chapter of the U.S. Bartenders Guild, and a cocktail seminar on the life and favorite drinks of Ernest Hemingway.  Due to COVID, I ended up doing a ZOOM event.

March 13, 2020, presented a cocktail seminar on 1920s Paris for the Sandy Spring Museum, Sandy Spring, MD.  This was part of the extend tour of the book A Drinkable Feast: A Cocktail Companion to 1920s Paris.  Sold out event, 130 tickets sold.

January 30, 2020, presented a cocktail seminar on the history and folklore of the Manhattan cocktail, for the Jefferson, an assisted living complex in Arlington, VA.

January 17, at the request of the Dallas Museum of Art, presented a “Late Night Talk” on the topic of Paris in the 1920s, notably it’s nightlife, cocktails, and its famous denizens.  This is part of the extend tour of the book A Drinkable Feast: A Cocktail Companion to 1920s Paris.

December 16-17, 2019.  Was Master of Ceremonies, for the 12th year, the annual D.C. Holiday Cocktail Seminar. Due to the success of recent years, the event was offered over two evenings.

December 5, 2019, at the request of the law firm Vinson Elkins, LLC, conducted a bourbon whiskey tasting and cocktail class for 60 guests, namely, members of the firm and top clients.  The Tasting Room Wine Bar and Restaurant, National Harbor, MD.

November 22-23, 2019, served as a Whiskey Educator and curated visitors’ experiences in the Bourbon Bar, a new feature of the annual Grand Rapids Wine, Beer and Food Festival, Grand Rapids, MI.

November 13-14, presented two seminars for the Global IP Forum, San Diego, CA. One seminar was titled “IP (as in intellectual property law) Issues in the World of Cocktails,” the other titled “IP Issues Confronted by the U.S. Marine Corps.”

November 4, 2019, presented a cocktail seminar on New York’s nightclub scene in the 1930s, 40s and 50s. Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC.  100 attendees.

November 1, 2019, participated as a featured author at the historic National Press Club Book Fair, Washington, DC, the book presented for sale was A Drinkable Feast.  Was among top sellers of books at the Book Fair.

October 24, 2019, presented a seminar on the U.S. Marine Corps Trademark Licensing Program as part of an all-day symposium held by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, Alexandria, VA.

October 24, 2019, presented a mini-seminar on cocktails during the University Club’s annual Mark Russell Cigar Dinner.  This was another in a series of Cocktails & Comedy events with comedian George Peacock.  University Club, Washington, DC.

October 23, 2019, offered a toast and remarks about the Scofflaw Cocktail, during a 100th anniversary celebration of Prohibition at the historic National Press Club, Washington, DC.

October 19, 2019, co-presented a classic fall cocktails seminar at a “Cocktails and Comedy” performance with comedian George Peacock, a fundraiser for Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Georgetown, Wash, DC.

October 14, presented a seminar on the history and folklore of the Manhattan cocktail at award-winning bar/restaurant Dante, in Manhattan NYC.  Also judged a Manhattan cocktail competition amongst the staff.

September 12, 2019, served as emcee of a celebration of the 70th anniversary of the historic Carousel Lounge at the Hotel Monteleone, New Orleans.  Offered opening remarks on the history of the hotel and Carousel Lounge, and introduced dignitaries who also gave addresses, including City Council members and state legislatures, while also reading proclamations from the Governor of Louisiana and Mayor of New Orleans.

July 24, 2019, presented a cocktail seminar on the life, times, prose and favorite drinks of Ernest Hemingway, as part of the Leelanau Summinars Program, Leland, Michigan.

July 18-19, 2019, presented as part of two panel seminars at Tales of the Cocktail, New Orleans, LA.  One of the panels discussed famous writers (Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Ian Fleming, Graham Greene, et al.) and how they worked drinks into their prose, and the other was on the topic of cocktail origin myths, as in “who invented the Martini?” which has perhaps 10 different stories.  The discussion will explore how to explode/expose these myths, and other anecdotes.

May 21, 2019, spoke before the Navy Office of General Counsel’s Annual Symposium on trademark and copyright issues confronting the U.S. Marine Corps. Washington, DC.

October 20, 2018, for the fourth time since 2013, offered the introductory toast at the OSS Society’s William Donovan Dinner, Washington, DC.  The OSS Society commemorates the Office of Strategic Services, the U.S. intelligence and special operations agency created in World War II, and the predecessor to the CIA.  500 attendees, including many top-level military and government officials.  Presented the 69th Regiment Cocktail and gave an account of that illustrious unit and William Donovan’s Medal of Honor exploits in World War I.

July 22, 2016, presented a 20 minute PPT seminar with sample cocktails, a look at the favorite drinks and the life and times of Ernest Hemingway.  Event was held at Hemingway’s boyhood home in Oak Park, Illinois, a feature of the International Hemingway Society’s annual conference.

July 21, 2016, presented a seminar titled “Getting Lit at the Monteleone,” a look at the amazing literary tradition of this grand old hotel in New Orleans, focusing on its famous guests (Hemingway, Faulkner, Capote, Tennessee Williams, many more) and their favorite drinks.  Mr. Greene also hosted a Spirited Dinner at Dickie Brennan’s Steak House in New Orleans, focusing on the history and folklore of the Manhattan Cocktail, the topic of Mr. Greene’s second book.  Both events are part of the prestigious festival, Tales of the Cocktail, in New Orleans.  Mr. Greene and the chef created a menu featuring five courses matched with five historic and delicious cocktails.  With each course, Mr. Greene gave a brief history of the drink, and described how to make it at home.  The dinner was sold out, 60 very happy customers.

May 31, 2016, presented a 60 minute PPT seminar with sample cocktails on the history and folklore of the Manhattan cocktail, as part of the launch of the book, The Manhattan: The Story of the First Modern Cocktail (with recipes), published by Sterling Epicure.  The event was produced by Upshur Street Books, Washington, DC.

July 18, 2013, curated and presented a Spirited Dinner at Restaurant Criollo, Hotel Monteleone, New Orleans, titled “Cocktails in the Stream, Key West Conch and Cuban Cocktails and Cuisine From Hemingway’s Days on the Gulf Stream.”  Part of Tales of the Cocktail festival.  An exquisite, 5-course gourmet dinner featuring authentic cocktails paired to the cuisine, with personalized table-to-table interpretation of each cocktail course, anecdotes, recipes, etc.

April 12, 2013, produced, curated and oversaw the service of period-authentic 1920s cocktails for the Washington Ballet’s Annual Gala, “A Moveable Feast: The Hemingway in Paris Ball,” to celebrate the Ballet’s production of Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises.  The event was held at the Jefferson Building, Library of Congress, Washington, DC.  Arranged for sponsor donations, bar staff training, and entire production of beverage service for the evening.  Also signed 100 copies of To Have and Have Another – A Hemingway Cocktail Companion, which were given to donors as part of their gift bags.
